Celebrated annually on March 14th (3/14), Pi Day is a special occasion for math enthusiasts worldwide. Originating in the United States, this day honors the mathematical constant π (pi), which begins with 3.14—just like the date itself! Over the years, Pi Day has grown into a fun tradition celebrated in schools across the U.S. and even in some other countries, where students engage in contests, math-related activities, and, of course, plenty of pie-eating.
At EABH, Pi Day is one of the most anticipated events of the year for math lovers. It’s a day when logic, memory, and a love for numbers come together in an exciting challenge. Students try to memorize as many digits of pi as possible, with prizes rewarding their efforts. Here’s the prize breakdown:
20 digits – Candy
50 digits – Lollipop
75 digits – Kit Kat
100 digits – No lunch line pass or no uniform pass
150 digits – Slice of pizza
200 digits – Choose how a math teacher will dress for a day
300 digits – McDonald's order
307 digits (previous school record) – Haagen-Dazs ice cream + 2-liter Coke
This year's record – PIE a teacher!
Breaking Records!
The star of the event was Giovanna Henringer from Grade 8 White, who not only won this year’s challenge but also broke the school record, which was already her own. Last year, she amazed everyone by reciting 303 digits of pi. This year, she went even further, reaching 314 digits!
When asked how she manages to memorize so many digits, Giovanna shared that she breaks them down into groups of three and repeats them over and over. Her method clearly works, as she now holds the school's record!
A Sweet Victory
For her outstanding achievement, Giovanna earned the biggest prize: the chance to pie two teachers in the face! Her chosen targets? Mr. Daniel and Mr. B! Students gathered to witness the funny moment, and it was definitely one of the highlights of the day.
Congratulations to Giovanna and to all participants who took on the challenge! Who will be the next to break the record? Start memorizing now! Next year’s Pi Day (3/14) is just around the corner!
