Did Scarlett Johansson sue Disney?

Updated: Mar 13, 2022

Scarlett Ingrid Johansson is an American actress that is mostly known for her Marvel Studios’ character “Black Widow”. Black Widow was officially announced at 2019 in the San Diego Comic-Con in July, with the release date being May 1st, 2020. But, unfortunately, because of COVID-19, everyone had to stop filming and Disney had to postpone the release of the movie. The movie was finally released on July 8th, 2021, in theaters and on Disney’s streaming service Disney+. However, since we are still in a pandemic, most of the people did not go to the theaters and instead subscribed to Disney+. Seems reasonable, right? Apparently not, since it was the reason why Scarlett sued Disney. A few days after the release of Black Widow, the actress issued a statement saying that Disney had violated the contract they had made, and that Disney had streamed Black Widow on Disney+ while the movie was still in the cinemas. Scarlett alleged that the company was using the pandemic to gain signatures in Disney+, and Disney, on the other hand, claimed that Scarlett was just ignoring the realities of COVID-19. To sum it all up, we can just say that the actress sued Disney over the streaming release of “Black Widow” .

Almost two months ago, Scarlett settled her lawsuit with Disney, which resulted in the payment of 40$ million dollars and granting of premier access on Disney+. And you will probably never see Scarlett in another Marvel movie again. The lawsuit impacted the entertainment industry and influenced other actresses into doing the same thing as Scarlett such as Emma Stone and Emily Blunt. Other celebrities are going against big companies just like Scarlett, but not just actresses, singers etc... In my opinion Scarlett made an excellent choice, because she did what she thought was right and that’s what matters.
