Recently there has been an arm wrestle in the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court between Minister Alexandre de Morais and billionaire Elon Musk, which has led to the ban of the social media platform X, formally known as Twitter. Everything started when Morais determined the ban of several accounts that were allegedly spreading misinformation and hate speech, with the penalty of daily fees if the order wasn’t fulfilled. However, X didn’t obey the judicial decision and therefore the judge applied daily fees and told the administrator that he would have to respond for not acting. Elon Musk consequently instructed to fire all X employees and close the company’s office in Brazil. Since Brazil’s internet law, which underlines the rights of usage, requires the platform to have an office and administrator in Brazil, Morais expressed a judicial order for X to designate a representative by a determined date, and since X didn’t fulfill that order once again, he outright banned the platform in Brazil.
This entire conflict is polarizing people's opinions between supporting the ban for its effort to stop the spread of false information and the sovereignty of Brazil's institutions. In contrast, some people argue that it harms free speech and gives too much power to authorities. This situation is drawing attention from all over the world with people debating on how governments should handle these platforms and how this resolution will impact the future of social media in the country.
